AUGMENTED LANDSCAPES
The Oregon silverspot butterfly is a rare and endangered species that is found in a limited range of coastal habitats in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. Its habitat includes coastal grasslands, meadows, and open woodlands, where its larval host plant, the early blue violet, grows. The Oregon silverspot butterfly requires a very specific type of habitat, with a mixture of open grassland and patches of forest, as well as areas of bare ground for basking and egg-laying. It also needs a nearby source of nectar for adult feeding, such as wildflowers and other flowering plants. Unfortunately, much of the Oregon silverspot butterfly's habitat has been lost due to human development, agriculture, and invasive plant species, Conservation efforts are underway to protect and restore its remaining habitat and promote the growth of its host plant and nectar sources.
